TMC Training -- Needs and Resources

These pages summarize TMC training needs and resources for addressing those needs. Here you will find a list of jobs associated with Caltrans/CHP-operated TMCs, along with job functions; required skills, knowledge, and attitudes; and corresponding types and sources of training. This material is based on a framework for training needs described in the Long-Range Plan for Traffic Management Training, which is a work in progress, and leans heavily on the draft Caltrans report TMC Operations Guide as well as Combating Congestion - Systems and Skills for a High Tech Solution, a report by the PMR Group for the California Alliance for Advanced Transportation Systems (CAATS).

This site is designed to provide a discussion forum where you can enter comments and suggestions for revising the materials. To submit a comment or suggestion, click the FEEDBACK symbol wherever it appears within the site (usually at the bottom of each page).

The information at the site is organized hierarchically. Click any highlighted (blue) phrase to access further details.

The site contains a master list of proposed training activities organized by modules, which can be accessed directly by clicking here. Each training module has been identified by examining the skills and other attributes pertinent to the various job types related to TMCs. The training modules are further organized by individual job types, which can be accessed by clicking below. (Note that these are descriptive titles, not necessarily official Caltrans or CHP job classifications.)
