Dr. Damian Kachlakev is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Professor Kachlakev is a member of the ACI, the ASCE, the ASTM, the International Association for Bridges and Structural Engineering, the International Society for Plastics in Construction, the Society of Plastics Industry, and the Composite Institute. He serves as a member of the ACI Committee 440- Fiber Reinforced Polymers, ACI Committee 524- Plaster and ASTM D20.18.01- FRP for Concrete Reinforcement, developing new standards and guidelines for design, construction and testing of reinforced concrete structures using FRP materials.

Dr. Kachlakev is involved in various aspects of FRP-related research and development. The results of his investigations on performance of FRP rebars, and strengthening of bridges and structural members using FRP materials have been presented in numerous publications, and national and international conferences. He was playing a central role in the design, construction and analysis of the first bridge in Oregon to be strengthened with FRP laminates (photo, article 1). Professor Kachlakev’s efforts in designing the only FRP hollow reinforcing bar in the world have been recognized nationwide.  He is recognized worldwide for his consultancy and designs of many rehabilitation projects with FRP composites in the USA and Europe.

Dr. Kachlakev leads a team of scientists and swimming pool industry companies in a strategic research dealing with many different aspects of the national swimming pool industry needs. As a result of his research, the pool industry decided to establish a long term relations with Cal Poly and constructed the only swimming pool research center in the US. The National Pool Industry Research Center (NPIRC) was built during the summer of 2004 at a cost of over $850,000 (photo of the research center). Since 2003 the National Plasterers’ Council Foundation sponsors the NPIRC on a regular basis. The annual research grants exceed $250,000. As of 2008-2009 academic year the total research grants to the NPIRC exceeded $1,850,000, which is the largest long standing research funding contributions to the College of Engineering. Professor Kachlakev is the NPIRC Founding Director and principle investigator on most of the Center’s studies.

RESEARCH

Dr. Kachlakev’s research interests are in the areas of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) for structural applications; strengthening and retrofit of bridges; structural analysis; swimming pools materials and durability; paving materials; white cement and performance of swimming pools; concrete and asphalt pavements. Professor Kachlakev played a key role in the establishment of the new National Pool Industry Research Center (NPIRC) (NPC Atricle, NPC Article 2).  The research findings of the NPIRC are reported in many major journals and trade press magazines (Pool and News, Dec. 2005; Aqua magazine, April 2006; Pool and Spa New, 2005; Pool and Spa New, Febuary 2005).

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

At Cal Poly State University, Professor Kachlakev teaches CE 453-Structural Steel Design; CE 355-Reinforced Concrete Design; CE 204 and CE 205-Strength of Materials, Parts I and II; CE 259-Civil Engineering Materials; and CE 521-Airfield and Highway Pavement Design. Dr. Kachlakev also teaches two new courses related to the use of advanced FRP materials in structural engineering, i.e., CE 458 “FRP Design” and CE 459 “FRP Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Structures.”(Pictures 1, 2, 3, 4)

 At Oregon State University, Dr. Kachlakev taught the following courses: Structural Fundamentals; Civil Engineering Materials; Strength of Materials; FRP Design (newly developed graduate level course); Structural Theory, Part 2, Indeterminate Structures; Reinforced Concrete.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

            ACI 2003 Spring Convention, Vancouver, B.C., Canada Two teams from Cal Poly participated in the ACI FRP beam competition. (Pictures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
